Sixteenth Day of December: Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone Ch 1 – 7 Review

Today was my English Lesson with miss Annette and the essay that she asked me to create is about Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone or Sorcerer Stone. I was about to write a review about the whole book but Miss Annette decided that taking the whole book is to extreme and will take too long. So here it is from Chapter 1-7.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone 1-7

Lately I’ve been listening to J.K. Rowling’s first book which is Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone. It is read by Stephen Fry. This is a review about what happened in the book.

The first couple chapter tells a story about a young Harry Potter and his foster family the Dursleys, Harry’s mother sister family, which according to the wizard was “as muggle as it can be”, while harry was the son of two great wizard and he is the only person which survived the meeting with Voldemort or “You-Know-Who”.

The first couple chapters shows how terrible Harry’s life was while living with the Dursleys. Living in a cupboard, getting bad treatment not just from Dudley, but from both his Uncle and his Aunt. Until a certain day which he got a letter from Hogwarts. Peculiarly, the letter knew that Harry sleeps in the cupboard.

His uncle tried to hide the fact that it’s a letter from Hogwarts to make sure he doesn’t go to Hogwarts. He tried to hide the letter, change Harry’s room, even taking Harry to a hut in the middle of the forest so the mail wouldn’t come. Which would result fruitless as Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and the Grounds of Hogwarts, came to deliver the letter by himself.

After confirming that Harry is going to Hogwarts, Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley to buy his school supplies. While they were in Diagon Alley they decided to get some money from Gringotts Wizarding Bank. There Harry take the money from the Potter Family Vault while Hagrid bring a small package from Vault 713. There Hagrid also gave him the ticket for the Hogwarts Express that go to Hogwarts.

The day he’s supposed to take the train was here and he asked his uncle to take him to King’s Cross Station. There he cannot find the train he was searching for in platform 9 and ¾. There heard a family of ginger heads talking about Hogwarts and ask the mother the way to platform 9 ¾.

On the train he was introduced to George and Fred Weasley the twin from the ginger haired family. He also meet their younger brother Ron Weasley which will be one of the main character in the series.

On the train Ron teach Harry many things about magic like Quidditch, Chocolate Frog and the Collectible Card, and get a card with Albus Dumbledore In it. They also meet the heroine of the story, Hermione Granger, an overachieving and somewhat annoying. They also meet with Draco Malfoy and his buddies Crabbe and Goyle.

After Draco makes some rude comments about Ron, Harry rejects Draco’s offer to advise him about associating with the right kind of wizards. All the students have heard of Harry, and Harry is not sure how to respond to his fame. Arriving at the station, the newcomers are led by Hagrid onto boats which they sail to the castle of Hogwarts.

The new student was greeted by Professor McGonagall at the castle door, which tell them that they will soon be sorted to their own houses. All student live in of the four residence: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, which each have their own Quidditch team. Each team is in a yearlong competition over who can win the most point in which they can gain by winning the Quidditch game or by getting points from academicals achievement given by the professors and lose by student infraction, in order to win the House Cup awarded by the end of the year.

As the student enter Hogwarts, ghost appear in the hallway. Then they enter the Great Hall which is filled with student waiting for them. They sees a pointy hat on top of a stool. When they put the Sorting Hat on, it will announce the houses that they are placed in. Harry became very nervous as he doesn’t want anything to do with Slytherin house, as the student are unpleasant and Voldemort once belong there. Both Hermione and Ron was sorted to Gryffindor, much to Ron’s displeasure. Finally when it was Harry’s turn, he and the sorting hat has some discussion about how he doesn’t want to go to Slytherin house and after a while, the hat shouted Gryffindor! Draco Malfoy was put in Slytherin.

Everyone sat down and the feast started. Harry is overwhelmed by the amount of luscious food served. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, the resident ghost of Gryffindor (popularly known as Nearly Headless Nick because of a botched decapitation), introduces himself to the first-year students and tells them he hopes they will win the house championship this year.

Harry glances around the room and sees the teacher talking to each other. One of them, while talking to Professor Quirrell, Stares malevolently at Harry and he feels a sharp pain at his forehead scar. Harry found out that this man is Professor Severus Snape who teaches Potions. After dessert, Dumbledore get up and give a welcoming speech. He also add some warning about staying away from the Forbidden Forest and avoiding the 3rd-floor corridor on the right side of the castle before sending everyone off to the Common Room.
